Berkeley Defi Research Initiative

Projects

We work closely with our partners to identify and solve major bottlenecks to propel future growth of defi applications.

Cryptography

The project studies cryptographic algorithms that underpin decentralized and trustless public ledgers and how to improve their energy efficiency and adoption in the consumer market.

Decentralized Storage

As multiple blockchain networks are working on dramatically increasing transaction throughput, their data storage is still mostly centralized, which presents a singular point of failure that counters the decentralized nature of defi applications. The project studies new solutions to enable decentralized storage for a wider range of dApps.

Metaverse

The vision of materverse combines defi economics, digital assets, and 3D immersive user experience that will bridge our physical world and multiple virtual realities.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)

We study authoring tools and design methodologies to improve the user interaction experience with multimedia and interactive NFTs.

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)

We work with Berkeley Haas and Law Schools to study the adoption of DAOs to govern community-owned defi projects.

Decentralized Applications (dApps)

We work with Fung Institute, Blockchain X-Lab, and other incubators to foster innovative dApps that utilize blockchain technologies to offer disruptive real-world solutions.
